- Internationally-renowned contemporary artist, Spencer Tunick, acclaimed for his large-scale nude installation photographs is returning to Australian shores thanks to arts sponsorship from THE ICONIC
- Australians of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds are invited to take part in Spencer Tunick’s upcoming installation, ‘Sea Earth Change’ on Whitsunday Island
THE ICONIC, Australia and New Zealand’s leading online retailer, has today announced it will be sponsoring a unique installation by contemporary artist, Spencer Tunick, who will return to Australian shores to create a new large-scale thought proving nude artwork. The installation, entitled ‘Sea Earth Change’, will take place on Whitsunday Island and marks an important part of THE ICONIC’s We Are Human Summer 19/20 campaign, which explores and celebrates the humanity in all of us.
Set to occur on November 23, this once-in-a-lifetime installation invites Australians of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds to bare it all on the picturesque Whitehaven Beach, and together, make a statement about the vulnerability of humans, the fragility of nature and their inextricable connectedness.
For more information, and to apply for the chance to take part in the installation, visit www.seaearthchange.com. Spencer advises all interested participants register their interest as soon as possible to ensure they are considered to be part of this art project. In exchange for participating in Spencer’s ‘Sea Earth Change’ project, participants will receive a limited edition photograph of the installation.
This powerful installation is a precursor to THE ICONIC Summer Show 2019 (previously known as THE ICONIC Swim Show), which will see THE ICONIC take its annual flagship event on the road to Brisbane for the first time. Known for producing some of Australia’s most empowering, body-positive runways, this year’s show will further explore the message behind Spencer Tunick’s work by driving an authentic conversation about diversity, inclusion and body-positivity, as well as the urgent responsibility both people and organisations have to act on their social and environmental impacts.
Spencer Tunick commented on the arts sponsorship: ”To work in remote locations with groups of people provide logistical difficulties that often need support from brave collaborators. From participants, to the sponsors art works are often communal efforts. The resulting photographs will stand on their own and resonate as artworks that hopefully will provoke and energise”.
Alexander Meyer, Chief Marketing Officer of THE ICONIC added: “We are incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with someone of Spencer Tunick’s calibre. Spencer’s work strips everything back to create a statement – one that explores the concept of the vulnerability in both humans and nature. His images are impactful because of their nakedness and simplicity. It is this simplicity of existence that we, together with Spencer, want to highlight – that we are complicating the world through fear of the ‘anonymous other’.
“THE ICONIC believes everyone should feel valued and a sense of belonging in the world, regardless of our perceived differences. As a business, we strive to celebrate diversity and inclusion, and seek to appreciate the world we live in, while also recognising our responsibility for sustainability in fashion. Afterall, we are human, with the power to inspire and create change in the people and environment around us.”
To bring this artwork to life, Spencer Tunick, with the generous arts sponsorship from THE ICONIC, is calling for all Australians over the age of 18, to take part in the installation.
Applications will open on 30th October, and close on Thursday 14th November. Spaces are limited for this installation due to the remoteness of the location. Interested participants are urged to register their interest as soon as possible. For more information, and to apply for the chance to take part in the installation, visit www.seaearthchange.com. In exchange for participating in Spencer’s ‘Sea Earth Change’ project, participants will receive a limited edition photograph of the installation.
Spencer Tunick will unveil his final artwork on the first day of THE ICONIC’s Summer Show (Wednesday 27 November) at The Calile Hotel, Brisbane. This event is free and open to the public. Spencer Tunick will donate a large-scale framed photograph for auction afterwards, with all proceeds going to THE ICONIC’s charity partner, Thread Together.

About Spencer Tunick
Artist Spencer Tunick has been documenting the live nude figure in public, with photography since 1990. Since 1994, he has organised over 100 temporary site-related installations that encompass dozens, hundreds or thousands of volunteers, and his photographs are records of these events. The individuals en masse, without their clothing, grouped together, metamorphose into a new shape and extend into and upon the landscape like a substance. Tunick stages scenes in which the battle of nature against culture is played out against various backdrops, from civic center to coastline, humans are returned to a preindustrial, pre-everything state of existence. These group masses, which do not underscore sexuality become abstractions that challenge or reconfigure one’s views of nudity and privacy. The work also refers to the complex issue of presenting art in permanent or temporary public spaces.
